BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The vitality of a nation, the strength of a country, and the sustainability of a culture depend on the values that a nation pursues and brings. As the values of a nation are closely related to its history and culture and reflect its distinctive characteristics and cultural identity, the development and prosperity of a nation cannot be separated from the guidance of its values. National value plays an important role in orienting and adjusting thinking and action as well as guiding the people to realize their proclaimed positive values. It also provides a standard for them to judge what is right and wrong. In the context that the world is changing rapidly, and the competition for values as well as ideological and cultural conflicts in the world is becoming increasingly intense, the requirement on building and protecting national values has a particularly important meaning in the defense and development of the country. In order to protect and develop the nation in all aspects, especially in the new context, we must not only inherit the traditional values of the nation, the outstanding achievements of human civilization, including the advanced values but also build a value system in which national values play the role as backbone and core, covering and reflecting the essential attributes of Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese people, and Vietnamese nation. This is the basis for building and promoting Vietnamese cultural values and human strength for the sake of national independence and socialism as the spirit of the 13th National Party Congress of Vietnam affirmed.
It can be said that researching and building national values is a significant task for the new era. In Vietnam, theoretical awareness of national values has not yet reached a consensus among researchers, therefore the is an urgent need for further exchanges and discussions related to national values. For that reason, the Institute of Philosophy plans to coordinate with Council for Research in Values and Philosophy, USA (RVP) to organize an international scientific conference with the theme “National Values in the New Context”.
CONTENT OF THE CONFERENCE:
The conference will focus on the following issues:
Firstly, Theories and approaches to national values
Secondly, The key contents of national values
Thirdly, Functions and roles of national values in the nation-building
Forthly, The relationship between traditional values and modern values
Fifthly, International perspectives and experiences in building national values
Sixthly, National values in the context of cultural dialogues and conflicts
Seventhly, National values and the possibility of building a common value system for humankind
Eighthly, Philosophy: the West, the East, and Vietnam from the perspective of national values
ORGANIZATION:
In addition to the opening and closing sessions, the Conference will have plenary sessions and thematic discussions, bilateral talks on cooperation plans, publication, and scientific exchange. Some papers in each topic group will be selected and presented at the plenary sessions. The remaining papers will be presented and discussed at the discussion sessions.
After the Conference, the papers will be evaluated and selected for publication in the Philosophy Review (Institute of Philosophy) as well as in the international conference proceedings (the Vietnamese version is published in Vietnam, and the English version is expected to be published in the United States).
